Proverbs 18 vs 21 says: Death and life (are) in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
Read that carefully, you will notice that it says Death and Life are in the power of the tongue, it didn’t just say in the tongue, emphasis on Power.
What does that tell you? Our tongue has inherent power, whether you are a believer or an unbeliever.
Today, we will look into the power of speaking the Word of God over our lives, situations, and circumstances, why it is important to speak God’s word, and the benefits and scriptures of speaking God’s word.
For in the believer’s prayer, we are simply speaking faith-filled words or speaking the Word of God either back to God or to that situation.
During Worship, the songs we sing are also words that talk more about what Jesus has done for us, who we are in him, and what we can do through him!
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE WORD OF GOD IN THE LIFE OF A BELIEVER
As I have mentioned several times in my teachings the Word of God takes the place of the risen Christ, therefore imagine if Jesus was physically present with you, how much attention you would give him?
It is this same attention we should give to the Word of God, for God and his Word are one.
Have you forgotten that we are born of the incorruptible Word of God that liveth and abideth forever? – 1 Peter 1 vs 23.
The World we live in today was framed by the Word of God, now think about this for a moment. Don’t you see how powerful and important the Word of God is?
Hebrews 4 vs 12 tells us that the Word of God is quick and powerful.
Do you remember when the Devil tempted Jesus at the mountain? How was Jesus able to overcome the Devil if not by speaking the word of God back to him?
Now, we first need to give preeminence to the study of God’s word in our lives, what we do not study, we can’t know of.
Acts 2 vs 32 says: And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.
God’s word can build us up, equipping us with the right knowledge on how to win in Life, navigate this earth, and show us our true identity in Christ.
Another importance of God’s word in our lives is that it provides us with guidance and wisdom, see the Bible verses below:
Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Psalm 19:7: “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.”
God’s word can produce Joy and Peace even amid chaos:
Jeremiah 15:16: “Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart.”
Psalm 119:165: “Great peace have those who love Your law.”
God’s word brings deliverance and freedom:
John 8:32: “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
Psalm 34:4: “I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.”
Reading God’s word is the foundation and key that Produces Spiritual Growth:
1 Peter 2:2: “As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God… that the man of God may be complete.”
In addition, if we desire true transformation in our character, God’s Word has the power to change us:
2 Corinthians 3:18: “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image.”
Romans 12:2: “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
THE POWER OF SPEAKING THE WORD OF GOD

Our opening text is taken from James 3 vs 5 – 6:
Even so, the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. (KJV)
In verse 2 of the chapter of the opening text, it says, “If any man offends not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body”.
In other words, James taught that our words govern and control our lives. That is, your word directs the course of your life.
That’s, if a man can master his words, he will master his life. In the four gospels, our Lord Jesus taught concerning the importance of words.
Luke 6 vs 45, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh”.
In other words, the words that we speak emanate from the information that we have in our minds or thoughts.
Hence, if I can control my thoughts, I can control my words and consequently my actions.
Therefore, it is necessary for believers to be full of God’s word (Colossians 3 vs 16) so that whenever they are faced with any challenge what comes out is the Word of God for when we speak God’s word, Power is released out of our mouth.
Remember our opening text in the introduction tells us that the tongue itself has the power of Life and death.
This means you can bring life or death into any situation by speaking, words aren’t empty, and your words carry power.
It is important to mention that words play a major role in our salvation.
Romans 10 vs 9 -10, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be save. For with the heart, man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth, confession is made unto salvation”.
We heard God’s words (the message of faith) that was preached. Then, we believed the gospel (communicated via words) with our hearts and confessed the same with our mouths, and we were saved.
Thus, now that we are saved in Christ, we must renew our minds with God’s word consistently, regularly, and daily.
The writer of Hebrews also taught about this fact in Hebrews 13 vs 5 – 6, “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me”.
Reading contextually, what we have is what he has said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. In other words, we are to be content with what he has said (God’s word).
Notice what he said in verse 6, So that we may boldly say, the lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
We, therefore, have a responsibility to feed our minds with God’s word and put the same on our lips all the time.
Therefore, walking in the Spirit is the same as walking in the Word, begins with believers feeding our minds daily with God’s word which would influence our words, and consequently our actions.
Make it a duty today to always put God’s word on your lips for it can influence your thoughts, words, and actions.
SPEAKING THE WORD OF GOD BIBLE VERSES
Deuteronomy 6 vs 6 – 7(Bible in Basic English):
Verse 6: Keep these words, which I say to you this day, deep in your hearts;
Verse 7: Teaching them to your Children with all care, talking of them when you are at rest in your house or walking by the way, when you go to sleep, and when you get up.
Psalms 119 vs 13 (Contemporary English Version):
With my own mouth, I tell others the laws that you have spoken.
Joshua 1 vs 8 (Bible in Basic English):
Let this book of the law be ever on your lips and in your thoughts day and night, so that you may keep with care everything in it; then a blessing will be on all your way, and you will do well.
Isaiah 55 vs 11:
“So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
God’s word spoken will always accomplish what it is sent to do, Isaiah tells us that God’s word cannot return empty!
Matthew 4 vs 4 (CEV):
“Jesus answered, ‘The Scriptures says: No one can live only on food. People need every word that God has spoken.”
Acts 4 vs 31:
“After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly.”
BENEFITS OF SPEAKING THE WORD OF GOD
Here are the key benefits of speaking God’s word over your life, family, and every other thing that concerns you:
Speaking the Word of God builds our Faith:
Our words either build fear or faith. Our words either cause us to worry, murmur, or glorify God knowing that he will never leave us nor forsake us.
Jesus said in Matthew 12 vs 36 – 37:
“But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words, you will be justified, and by your words, you will be condemned.” – Matthew 12:36-37 (NIV)
By our words, we will be justified and by our words, we will be condemned.
Speaking the Word brings out the good things we have on our inside:
Matthew 12 vs 33 – 35:
“Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.”
Brings Victory over Enemy/Spiritual Warfare
Ephesians 6 vs 17: “Take… the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Revelation 12 vs 11: “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”
Matthew 4 vs 4,7,10: Jesus defeated Satan by speaking God’s word: “It is written…”
Speaking the Word of God Creates Manifestation/Results
Isaiah 55 vs 11: “So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please.”
Numbers 23 vs 19: “God is not a man, that He should lie… Has He said, and will He not do it?”
Speaking the Word Brings Healing and Health
Psalm 107 vs 20: “He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.”
Proverbs 4 vs 20 – 22: “My words are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.”
Brings Success and Prosperity
Joshua 1 vs 8: “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth… then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”
Psalm 1 vs 2 – 3: The one who meditates on God’s word “shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water… whatever he does shall prosper.”
The Book of Psalms 91 VS 2 – 3 tells us to say out loud “I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress’… Surely He shall deliver you.”
Finally, speaking the Word of God is a constant reminder of who we are, what we have and what we can do, what we speak always, what we hear, and what we hear can transform our lives and circumstances.
